John, the U.S. Surgeon General just issued a groundbreaking advisory declaring gun violence a national public health crisis. The report confirms that this issue is uniquely American; our gun-related death rate is 11.4 times higher compared to 28 other high-income nations.

I’m grateful to the Surgeon General for speaking the truth. But John, it doesn’t have to be this way. By taking a public health approach to combating gun violence, we can save lives and end the destruction.

It’ll require a comprehensive effort to increase gun violence research (something the NRA has fought federal funding for), invest in interventions and educational programs, and increase access to mental health care. Most of all, we need to pass federal legislation to implement universal background checks, ban assault weapons, and require safe storage.

John, that has been my mission since I was first elected to Congress, and I was a key player in passing the first major gun violence prevention legislation in 30 years.
