I know firsthand just how life-changing and life-saving seeing our stories in mainstream media can be. As a producer on Good Morning America, I shared the secret I hid for over eight years: I'm HIV-positive. I felt ashamed, alone, and scared because I knew what our society whispers about people like me.

But the response I got in sharing my diagnosis was overwhelming. I learned that accepting my diagnosis meant accepting myself first. And I found that being brave enough to tell my story helped so many others accept people like me.
