Five months into an otherwise uneventful pregnancy, Marie and Noel got the news: something was seriously wrong with their baby's heart. Faced with uncertainty and fear, they turned to Children's Hospital Los Angeles.

E.J. was diagnosed in utero with pulmonary atresia, a heart defect that prevents blood from flowing normally from the heart to the lungs to pick up oxygen for the body. As a result, his blood oxygen levels could drop to dangerously low levels. At CHLA, E.J.'s care team included world-class pediatric heart surgeons, heart rhythm specialists, neonatologists and imaging specialists. "They quickly developed a whole plan for us," says Marie.

From the moment he was born, E.J. received around-the-clock monitoring and care at CHLA. He underwent several complex medical procedures in his first three years of life. Throughout E.J.'s treatment journey, his parents were comforted by how closely the doctors, nurses and other team members at CHLA listened to them. "Their knowledge and attentiveness really gave us peace of mind," Marie says.

Once his heart was big enough, E.J. had one final surgery called a Fontan procedure to help his heart pump blood to his lungs. The improvement was immediate-for the first time in his life, E.J.'s blood oxygen levels were normal. Today, at 8 years old, E.J. is a thriving kid who loves jiu-jitsu, and plays soccer and piano. He lives life to the fullest, thanks to the care he received at CHLA, or as he likes to call it, "The Butterfly Hospital."
