Hi friend, I'm Eric Sorensen -- NewDem Member and Congressman from Illinois.
Speaker Mike Johnson came to my district to fundraise for my opponent, Joe McGraw. I wanted to update you on his remarks on our race.
First, Johnson called McGraw “one of the best recruits” the GOP has ever had. While it’s shocking that someone who prayed for the overturn of Roe and referred to Democrats as the “antichrist” is considered a good recruit, I can’t say I’m really surprised. After all, national Republicans handpicked McGraw and bankrolled his primary campaign, pushing him to outperform Donald Trump in the district.
Johnson then boasted that they are “raising record amounts” for candidates like McGraw. Already, McGraw has received the fifth-largest investment from Johnson’s fundraising operation and this visit was just the start of their all-out push to flip our seat. Later this month, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise is coming to headline yet another fundraiser for McGraw.
These visits are not happening in a lot of other places. Republicans send their leadership to districts that are key to them keeping the house, and that’s exactly what Johnson called our race.
I don’t agree with him on much of anything, , but when he said flipping IL-17 “will be key to keeping the majority,” I really can’t disagree.
Since Election Night 2022, when I won by the narrowest margin of any Democrat in the Midwest, I’ve known that there was a storm of Republican dark money coming to get me this year. With Johnson getting involved and signaling to donors that this is the race in the midwest, that storm has finally arrived.
