Friend,
The most-read piece of reporting at Common Dreams over the last week is about a new study showing how toxic chemicals from the Norfolk Southern train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, last year spread to 16 states following the disaster.
Quite interestingly, the second most-read article of the week is a story we reported in 2018 about how the U.S. would save $5.1 trillion over a decade by shifting to Medicare for All. It is a perennial favorite and it should be with this key quote: “It’s easy to pay for something that costs less.”
These stories — though published more than five years apart — epitomize our work. They help inform tens of thousands of readers nationwide about crucial issues that are nearly totally ignored by major corporate outlets.
Why are they ignored? Just follow the money. The same corporations that stand to lose from stronger enforcement of environmental laws or health care reform literally own or fund our major news outlets.
Common Dreams has never taken a dime in corporate advertising, and we never will. However, our people-powered nonprofit journalism model relies on readers' donations to survive. And right now, donations to our Mid-Year Campaign are way off the pace we need to hit our goal.
We can’t afford to fall short. Please donate $27 — or whatever amount you can afford — to help support Common Dreams and keep independent journalism alive and strong.
