Grand Opening of The Westerly, Celebrating CCR Graduates, Community Spotlight, & Get Involved! June 2024 E-Newsletter AHC, Hoffman & Associates, and Mayor Bowser Celebrate The Westerly On June 17, Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC), Hoffman & Associates, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, and Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen celebrated the grand opening of The Westerly, located in the heart of the district’s Southwest neighborhood. This new community includes 449 apartments, 136 of which are affordable, ranging from studios to two-bedrooms with dens. The crowd had the honor of hearing from Amber Johnson, a new resident of The Westerly. She lives in the community with her young son, whom she hopes to send to the AppleTree Early Learning Public Charter School, a pre-kindergarten education partner located at The Westerly. Read More & Watch Video   CCR HIGHLIGHTS AHC Celebrates 2024 Graduates of College & Career Readiness Program Family, friends, and mentors celebrated the 42 graduates of AHC’s College & Career Readiness (CCR) program on June 17. The graduates received acceptance from 68 out of the 105 schools they applied to and received $3.8 million in gift aid and scholarships from those schools. All of the graduates have committed to attending a four-year university or two-year community college. Read More & Watch Video   Next Step, College Last month, seniors in our College & Career Readiness program and their families gathered to celebrate the students' next steps at our college signing event. We celebrated their achievements and heard from each student about their upcoming college plans. Check out this short video. Catching Up with CCR Alums Flor and Michelle, two alums from AHC’s CCR program, graduated this spring with master’s degrees. AHC is proud to have supported these students on their journeys. Merchants Capital JBG Smith   REAL ESTATE RECAP In This Together Last week, we had the privilege of attending the 33rd Annual HAND Honors to accept the award for Best Large Affordable Housing Project for The Westerly. The event’s theme was “In This Together.” We were happy to see Toromo Funsho, who is from an AHC community and was last year’s recipient of the GenerationHAND scholarship, as she introduced this year’s recipient and shared insights from her first year of college at the University of Virginia. In Case You Missed It Paul Bernard, AHC President & CEO, appeared on AHC Board Member Gunnar Branson’s podcast to discuss solutions to the housing crisis. Authority Magazine profiled Paul for its “How We Are Helping To Make Housing More Affordable” series. Cindy Rozón, Senior Director of Resident Services, spoke with journalists about AHC’s substance use disorder treatment services. In an article about the housing crisis’s effect on this year’s election, Benzinga and Yahoo! Finance quoted Paul. Alan Goldstein, Vice President of Real Estate Development at AHC, participated in a panel at the Montgomery County Commission on Aging’s public forum.   NEWS NUGGETS Happy Father's Day from AHC! We celebrated Father's Day with our young residents by making cards and keychains using shrink art, which is paper that shrinks and hardens when heated.     Empowering Residents through Art Last month, residents in our Women's Empowerment program attended a Sip & Paint event at the Greenmount West Community Center, a Baltimore partner. The residents enjoyed snacks and drinks while they painted portraits of strong Black women.     Spotlighting AHC Communities Introducing #CommunitySpotlights, a new video series on our social media accounts. We want you to meet our amazing onsite Resident Services team members who work directly with residents to create meaningful relationships and build community. First up, Seila told us about what Resident Services means at Gates of Ballston, an AHC community in Arlington. Check out the video.   GET INVOLVED Support AHC Campers Join us in putting together summer snack bags for the students in our education programs. Our snack bag opportunity is a chance for volunteers to put together delicious and nutritious snacks for the students participating in the 2024 AHC Summer Camp. These snack bags help keep the students at our centers fueled while they learn and play. This is a great at-home volunteer opportunity for families and individuals.
