recent weeks, as the Supreme Court issues unpopular decisions about gun
safety, gerrymandering, and more, there’s a parallel storyline about the
ethics violations of Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito.

The bottom line? These justices have proudly violated ethics rules — but
because there is no enforceable code of ethics for the Supreme Court,
there is no recourse.

What’s come to light about Justices Alito and Thomas, just in the past few
weeks, shows how broken our system is when it comes to the ethics of the
Supreme Court:

* Clarence Thomas, issuing rulings on some of the most consequential
cases of our time, was taking lavish trips paid for by a MAGA
billionaire who wants to do away with climate protections, rip away
reproductive rights, and more.
* Samuel Alito and his wife flew an upside-down flag, a symbol for the
ultra right-wing, “Stop the Steal” movement outside their home.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court is currently deliberating a case related
to January 6 insurrectionists.
* Speaking of January 6, Clarence Thomas’ wife played a significant role
in trying to overturn the 2020 election. She attended the January 6
protest on the National Mall, and she texted Trump’s chief of staff
while the insurrection took place at the Capitol.
* In a leaked recording, Samuel Alito expressed doubt about whether
compromise is possible on key issues, or whether one side must prevail
entirely over the other, and agreed that we need to “return our
country to a place of godliness.”

I could go on with these egregious violations of both ethics and
hyper-partisanship,

We must take definitive action to restore the court’s integrity — before
the already decreasing trust in the Supreme Court diminishes beyond the
point of repair.
