A federal court has issued a preliminary injunction of SF 2340.

Friend –

Last week, a federal court temporarily blocked Iowa's SF 2340, <[link removed]> one of the worst anti-immigrant laws ever passed in Iowa.

Dubbed as a "criminal reentry" law, it would have gone into effect on July 1 and had a catastrophic, far-reaching impact. The poorly written law would have put even those immigrants with lawful status – and even people who were brought to this country as children – at risk for arrest, deportation, family separation, and incarceration.

Iowa law enforcement officials have spoken out against the law, saying it would harm public safety by undermining relationships of trust with immigrants in their communities, for example, by preventing victims and witnesses from calling the police for help when needed or from assisting law enforcement in investigating or prosecuting crimes.

Meanwhile, enforcing the law would no doubt result in the racial profiling of people of color – both citizens and noncitizens.

SF 2340 was a copycat bill, roughly based on Texas's SB 4, which has also been temporarily blocked in the courts. These types of laws create absolute chaos and human suffering and have no place in our legal system. We'll keep fighting in the courts to prevent this law and other unconstitutional anti-immigrant laws from ever going into effect.

With gratitude,

Mark Stringer
