Supreme Court decision in U.S. v. Rahimi prioritizes the safety of domestic violence survivors

"We applaud the Court for centering the lives of survivors over a dangerous abuser's access to firearms.

To drive home the high stakes that hung in the balance of this decision, the DC Coalition Against Domestic Violence (DCCADV) and the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) are sharing powerful stories from survivors who have faced the threat of firearms in abusive relationships. With the Court's ruling, we hope that we may continue to move toward a world free from this violence."

"At its core, the cycle of domestic violence is upheld by systemic inequalities and power imbalances that benefit those in positions of privilege and authority. As poverty is a major contributor to systemic inequalities, and money can exacerbate any power and control already present, this creates a system that benefits those with financial means. Thus, for those trapped in cycles of abuse and poverty, the decision to leave an abusive partner is not simply a matter of willpower but is fraught with economic obstacles."

"Also known as Oklahoma's Survivors Act, the law will be signed into effect on 1 September and will grant hundreds of people who experienced abuse the opportunity to be resentenced with more leniency in what is one of the most extensive reforms to the state's justice system following years of advocacy."
