The alumni of Poynter’s Leadership Academy for Diversity in Media have some pretty strong feelings about their experience.
“I discover that with every new situation or opportunity that arises in my work, I am presented with options that weren’t possible for me to think about before attending the academy,” reported 2022 program attendee Laura Albast, the senior editor of digital content strategy at the Institute for Palestine Studies.
Through Leadership Academy for Diversity in Media, Poynter’s BIPOC faculty and adjuncts have coached nearly 200 journalists of color as they focus on becoming more effective managers, visionary leaders and change agents.
We are now recruiting for our eighth group, which will meet for a week in September at Poynter in St. Petersburg, Florida.
“The leadership program really solidified my commitment to helping other journalists of color and living in my purpose,” said Dalila Johari-Paul, also a 2022 alum and the national editor of Capital B.

The Power of Diverse Voices is a transformative, four-day seminar that helps journalists of color find their voices and build skills for writing opinion pieces and personal essays.
With the support of expert instructors and fellow journalists of color, you’ll develop the confidence and skills to share your unique perspective in persuasive writing. This in-person, immersive experience will foster the diversity of voices necessary in the profession and train the next generation of opinion writers from a wide spectrum of backgrounds. Attendees will explore the role that opinion writing plays in explanatory, features and watchdog journalism, and its importance in a thriving democracy.

Wednesdays in October, 1-5 p.m. Eastern
This is an interactive, virtual training for all leaders who manage big responsibilities — such as processes, products or platforms — but have no direct reports.
Demonstrating leadership without formal authority is its own skill, and it’s core to this online leadership workshop from Poynter.
If you have the official title of project manager or product manager, or are in the position of being responsible for outcomes without formally supervising anyone (including those all-important bridge roles in audience, innovation and strategy), this program is for you.
