Last week, my office announced the findings of our audit of ShotSpotter — a technology used by the New York Police Department (NYPD) to detect and locate shootings.

The evidence is clear: The NYPD is wasting precious time and funds on ShotSpotter, and the department must better manage its resources.

The ShotSpotter system, which uses 2,000 acoustic sensors to detect gunshot activity, is intended to detect suspected gunfire and help NYPD officers locate activity more quickly.

However, despite claiming to be “a proven detection system,” we found that ShotSpotter actually sends NYPD officers to locations in response to other loud noises like car backfires and construction — not gunfire — 87% of the time.

I’ve called on the NYPD to decline the renewal of their enormous multi-million-dollar contract with ShotSpotter when it expires this December. Unfortunately, this recommendation was one of three that they’ve since rejected.

The NYPD’s response is disappointing, to say the least. But look, I’m not one to back down from a tough fight — not when it comes to wasted City resources, and especially not when it comes to public safety.
