Voting rights victories in Alabama and Louisiana

  • The Black mayor of a small Alabama town will finally be able to hold office after being physically blocked from town hall by his white predecessors, pending a signature from a federal judge on a legal agreement.


  • In a win for voters, the full 5th Circuit denied Louisiana’s request to consider whether voters can sue under the Voting Rights Act in a lawsuit challenging the state's legislative districts. Litigation will continue.


Updates on election cases in Alaska, California and Wisconsin

  • A trial started in Alaska today over a new ballot measure that seeks to repeal ranked choice voting and open primaries in the state. The plaintiffs argue the measure’s organizers failed to follow proper procedure when gathering signatures.


  • Hearings were held today in California and Wisconsin in separate lawsuits arguing that the states’ election systems violate the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.


The U.S. Supreme Court will not hear challenge to Georgia's Utility Board Elections

  • The Supreme Court declined to hear a lawsuit alleging that Georgia's election system for the state utility board violates the Voting Rights Act by diluting Black voters' power. The election method will remain in place.
