Two years ago today, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and ended the constitutional right to abortion. Since then, unfair maps have empowered extreme lawmakers to attack bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom in even more extreme ways, blatantly disregarding the will of the people. But we’re not letting them have the final word. Instead, we’re teaming up with Planned Parenthood Votes to invest in state supreme court races this year — to elect justices who can serve as a line of defense as more attacks on reproductive freedom and fair maps come down the pike.
The state-by-state push to ban abortions and threaten reproductive freedom is a symptom of a larger problem: the erosion of our democratic institutions. When we can't hold bad actors accountable at the ballot box, they use their unchecked power to advance their undemocratic goals. We must do everything in our power to prevent right-wing extremists from putting all of our fundamental rights on the chopping block. By investing in state supreme court races, we can elect justices who are dedicated to interpreting the law in a neutral way, who will adhere to precedent, and who will protect the fundamental rights of all Americans.
