This week is Black Maternal Health Week, and as the COVID-19 crisis threatens to exacerbate the inequities facing Black mothers, it's more important than ever that we recommit to affirming maternal justice and ensuring the health and well-being of Black mothers and their babies everywhere.
Statistics show that Black women are up to four times more likely to die due to a pregnancy-related cause than white women. Black Maternal mortality is a crisis that demands urgent action.
I am a proud co-sponsor of the Helping MOMS Act, which will expand coverage under Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and help ensure every mother access to high quality health care for a full year after giving birth — currently mothers are only covered for 60 days postpartum.
The lived experiences of Black women — and specifically Black mothers — demonstrate how racism and trauma becomes intergenerational. The entrenched disparities that exist must be addressed and corrected with bold legislation and action.
This Black Maternal Health Week, we must recommit ourselves to addressing the Black maternal health crisis — to ensure that every single mother has the healthcare they need.
Thank you for being a part of our movement for justice and equity,
Ayanna Pressley
