Friend,
Two years ago today, the federal right to an abortion came to an end.
After nearly half a century of protections for reproductive health care and medical privacy, the Supreme Court's decision triggered an avalanche of cruel, deadly restrictions across the country — leaving the United States once again fractured, now over the question of whether a woman has the right to decide what happens to her body, her future, and her life itself.
As of two years ago today, the right of 169 million Americans to choose was suddenly dependent on which state they call home, whether they can afford to leave it, and whether medical providers are willing to assume the legal risk that might arise from merely doing their jobs.
And on that day, Republicans like Rick Scott, Ron DeSantis, and Donald Trump rejoiced.
For years, the rights guaranteed in Florida's constitution made the Sunshine State a safe haven for abortion access across the Southeast. But when the Dobbs ruling came down two years ago today, that all changed — and from then on out, nothing stood in the way of our extremist governor's increasingly strict limitations on this medical procedure.
Without Roe v. Wade, some Florida women now have no choice but to travel 14 hours or more to receive abortion care. Some Florida women will be turned away from doctors' offices in the event of a life-threatening medical emergency. Some Floridians will die.
Anti-choice Republicans do not care — and they will not stop until this is the case for every woman who calls our country home.
Like many Latinos, I know what it means to have your freedoms stripped away by authoritarian leaders. My family came to America to flee that kind of oppression, and secure a better future for our families and generations to come — so I refuse to accept a future where my daughters enjoy fewer rights than I did at their age. Ya no más.
My opponent, Rick Scott, has proudly backed DeSantis' six-week ban. He eagerly co-sponsored the bill to enact a nationwide ban on abortions. Most recently, he released an ad promising to protect in vitro fertilization — just one day after voting to block such protections from passing in the Senate.
That's why I'm in this race, friend. I'm running to retire Rick Scott because I refuse to accept a world where out-of-touch extremists like him get to rip away our rights, then turn around and lie straight to our faces.
As I travel across Florida to spread the word about our movement, I'm determined to make sure Floridians know about the power we have this November: not only to take back our rights from GOP extremists, but to hold them to account for being so foolish as to think we'd let them win.
And if our people-powered movement succeeds at ending Rick Scott's Senate career, reinstating Roe v. Wade as the law of the land will be at the very top of my to-do list.
I will never stop fighting until the right to choose is restored to every Floridian, and every American, once more. I hope I can count on you to be in the fight with me.
Thank you,
Debbie
