John,
In 2022, when far-right extremists on the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade , I was sitting in the same healthcare facility where I once had an abortion at 18 after I was sexually assaulted and became pregnant.
It was during this visit, alongside Secretary Becerra, providers, abortion fund administrators, and people who had their own abortions, where I learned Missouri’s extremist politicians had made our state the first in the nation to enact a near-total abortion ban after Roe was overturned. It was shocking and horrifying, but as a long-time advocate for our abortion rights, I knew our fight was far from over.
Now, for the past two years states controlled by far-right politicians have had almost full reign over our reproductive freedoms. That’s two years of relentless attacks on our reproductive rights, two years of attempting to ban IVF and birth control, and two years since we witnessed the stripping away of the right to essential healthcare for millions of people.
Let’s make one thing clear — we are witnessing the Republican Party’s long-term plan to ban abortion nationwide play out before our eyes.
As someone who has had abortions, I will ALWAYS fight to affirm access to abortion care as a human right and to expand access to life-saving healthcare.
It’s why I testified before Congress, led a Reproductive Freedom Tour across Missouri, and put my body on the line and was arrested in front of the Supreme Court in support of bodily autonomy.
It’s why I am the first lawmaker in the post-Dobbs era to call for the repeal of the Comstock Act – an outdated law from 1873 that makes mailing "obscene" materials, like contraceptives and abortion medication, illegal.
Anti-abortion extremists and the Republican party have shown they will stop at nothing when it comes to stripping away our reproductive freedoms. They aren't hiding their playbook; reviving the outdated and obsolete zombie statute, the Comstock Act , is the GOP’s latest hack to bypass Congress and impose a nationwide abortion ban. When people tell you who they are, believe them.
Last week, I was proud to team up with Minnesota Senator Tina Smith and Vermont Representative Becca Balint in introducing the Stop Comstock Act to repeal this antiquated law and prevent anti-abortion Republican extremists from making good on their promise to strip away reproductive rights for millions of people across our country.
And , it’s why I am at the forefront of our fight to enshrine gender equality into the Constitution — including our right to bodily autonomy — by finally publishing the Equal Rights Amendment . As the co-founder and co-chair of the Equal Rights Amendment Caucus and the proud lead sponsor of the ERA Now Resolution , I know that this is possible.
The onslaught of attacks on reproductive freedom is deeply personal to me, to my constituents in St. Louis, Missouri, and to the vast majority of people in this country. We must fight back against far-right, anti-abortion extremism and work to build a world where abortion care isn’t only legal for everyone but where it is accessible and equitable for all.
Our progressive movement has a champion in me. I'm working day-in and day-out to STOP the GOP’s attempts to restrict access to abortion care – and I'm not backing down. Will you support my mission to expand reproductive rights by donating to my campaign before our end-of-quarter deadline? [[link removed]]
