Message from Congressman Scott Fitzgerald
Good afternoon, everyone, and happy Monday!
Congress is back in session this week and I’ll make my way back to Capitol Hill tomorrow for a busy week on the House floor. After passing the National Defense Authorization Act a couple of weeks ago, we’re moving full steam ahead into appropriations. This week we’ll be considering appropriations for the Department of Homeland Security, Department of State and Foreign Operations, and the Department of Defense. As with the previous appropriations bills, I plan to support proposals that cut reckless government spending and reject far left wish list items we’ve seen pushed by Democrats in the past.
Keep reading to catch up on last week’s updates while Congress was out of session, and to commemorate a special pro-life anniversary our nation is celebrating today.
Have a great week!
- Scott
2nd Anniversary of SCOTUS Dobbs Decision
Today, we celebrate the two-year anniversary of the Supreme Court of the United States’ ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization—a case involving a Mississippi law that limits abortion after 15 weeks. In this case, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the wrongly decided Roe v Wade decision, and the court rightly disposed of the egregious precedent it set. A major victory for the pro-life movement, and unborn babies.
Since the Dobbs decision, we’ve made some important steps forward in the fight for life. Today, 24 states have laws defending life at 15 weeks or sooner, with 20 states protecting babies with a heartbeat. Our fight is far from over, though. House Democrats continue to push pro-abortion laws, namely a proposal that would allow abortions all the way up through nine months of pregnancy—when a baby can hear, feel pain, and even survive outside the womb. In fact, you’ll be hard pressed to find a House Democrat who supports any limitation on abortions, at any stage of the pregnancy. It’s despicable.
We cannot let up on our pro-life efforts. I’m proud to be a cosponsor of several pieces of legislation that support life and support expecting mothers. So today we celebrate the Dobbs decision, but we do not rest our pro-life efforts.
Russia Outpaces U.S. in Supplying Natural Gas to Europe
I’ve talked at length in the past about President Biden’s anti-American energy agenda. The President has consistently made decisions that weaken our nation’s energy independence while emboldening our adversaries. You don’t need to take my word for it though, just last week Russia surpassed the U.S. in supplying natural gas to Europe. This is the case even despite Europe’s efforts to reduce its reliance on Russia following the country’s invasion into Ukraine.
Unfortunately, none of this is surprising when you consider in whole the President’s energy agenda—which more recently included halting the issuance of new licenses for natural gas exporters.
Customs & Border Protection Announces New Border Stats
Last week, Customs & Border Protection (CBP) announced the latest border statistics for the month of May.
Last month, there were 170,723 illegal immigrant encounters at our Southern Border, and May was the 39th straight month where monthly illegal immigrant encounters have been higher than even the highest month seen under President Trump.
These numbers come on the heels of President Biden announcing two new executive orders that will only further incentivize crossings at our Southern Border. Last week, the President announced an executive order that would grant amnesty to hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants, and before that, he announced an executive order that would permit a minimum of 1.8 million illegal immigrants to enter the country.
President Biden continues to fail the American people with his lack of leadership at the border.
