Now, my 22-year-old daughter has fewer rights than I did at her age — all because a few extreme judges decided politicians had the right to police women’s bodies.
I was running for governor when the news first broke, and I said this:
“Governors are now the final line of defense to protect access to safe and legal abortion, and it’s never been more urgent to vote for pro-choice champions at the state level.”
Today, I’m reflecting on how true that statement was and still is.
My former opponent, Kari Lake, thought it was “unfortunate” that Arizona wasn’t enforcing the 1864 abortion ban that I repealed earlier this year.
Numerous anti-abortion bills introduced by extreme Republican lawmakers have made it to my desk, and every last one has been vetoed.
Arizona still has a long way to go before we can call our state a safe haven for abortion access and reproductive freedom, but I’m proud of the fight we’ve put up so far to stop progress from being rolled back even further.
I’m hopeful that this November will be a turning point for our state.
