Throughout this month, we’ve discussed how hate and extremism impact the lives of many, including people of color, women, LGBTQ+ folks, Indigenous people and Jewish and Muslim communities. Our latest Year in Hate and Extremism report’s findings indicate a strong need to counter the far right’s plans to erode our democracy, especially as we inch closer to a very important election.

From the rise of white nationalist groups to the enactment of draconian laws, the impact of hate is being seen in every corner of our country.

Despite this alarming rise in hate and extremist groups, many Americans are standing up to hate by organizing and building political power through collective action. People like you, who support the SPLC’s mission, power our work to stop the far right's violent movement.

In response to today’s rising tide in hate, we are defending the communities we serve and work alongside on four fronts:

Tracking and exposing hate and extremism: In 2023, our Intelligence Project tracked 1,430 hate and extremist groups — up from 1,225 in 2022. This report is an important resource for those working to prevent radicalization and counter white supremacy, disinformation and false conspiracy theories in 2024. With more comprehensive data available, we can work together to stave off draconian legislation, hate violence and radicalization.

Legal action: The SPLC has been taking on legal battles against white supremacy since its founding in 1971. Today, we are in the courts fighting book bans, anti-LGBTQ+ laws and some of the most extreme voter suppression laws.

Increasing civic participation: In partnership with the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta, we are supporting organizations that are registering voters of color and organizing them around local issues in the Deep South.

Public policy: We work with lawmakers to advocate for legislation that will protect our communities. Although we cannot legislate hate out of existence, some key policy recommendations include making hate crime data collection mandatory; enforcing existing federal and state hate crime laws; providing more funding for preventative measures including hate crime prevention initiative programs and support services for those targeted by bias-motivated crimes; and expanding training for judges, prosecutors and law enforcement officials on alternative sentencing and restorative justice initiatives.
