It’s been two years since the Supreme Court issued its decision in Dobbs v. Jackson, overturning Roe v. Wade and undermining the health, dignity, and freedom of women across America.
For years, many of us warned that extreme politicians and groups wanted to overturn Roe, and urged people to vote accordingly—to think about protecting freedom to make our own choices when voting for people who write the laws and those who interpret them. For years, so many people discounted that position as unlikely or unthinkable. I can’t count the number of times people told me it just wouldn’t happen, or that the courts would never reverse Roe, even though they were already chipping away at the rights it afforded.
We know now that we must vote for people who will protect our freedom. We need to restore Roe—which we can do through legislation—and we need to prevent further attacks on our freedom. Because reversing Roe was not the end, it was just the beginning. And we see evidence of that here in Texas and across the country:
- The Texas Supreme Court ruled against women challenging Texas’ abortion ban who were denied medically necessary abortions to save their lives, health, and ability to have children.
- Senate Republicans blocked a bill that would have protected access to birth control.
- The House won’t even take up a bill to protect access to birth control.
- The Alabama Supreme Court issued its ruling halting IVF treatment in the state.
It’s a long and growing list, but we can do something about it. We can elect pro-choice leaders across Texas and the country who will fight to protect and restore our freedom.
The majority of Americans believe that decisions about reproductive health care should be made between patients and their care providers. People, not politicians. As do the majority of Texans.
The gap between public opinion and public policy speaks to fundamental dysfunction in our political system. But our political system also gives us important tools to fight back against the assault on our health and freedom. And that’s what we have to do now.
We must, must, must remember that we can and will make a difference. And I hope you’ll help make a difference today by considering a contribution to support our efforts to win our race in #TX07 and support pro-choice candidates on the ballot this year.
Together, we can do anything,
