CfA's April 17, 2020 Newsletter

Thank you for your continued support of CfA. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we are still working to hold the powerful accountable, especially as it pertains to topics relevant to the current crisis.

Our Latest Work:

  • How the NRA Lines Big Tech's Pockets After Mass Shootings: On Wednesday, CfA and TTP published our report “How the NRA Lines Big Tech's Pockets After Mass Shootings,” highlighting the fact that the NRA increases online ad spending in the wake of mass shootings, profiting Facebook and Google in the process.  (Press Release, Report )
    • The investigation was conducted as part of the Tech Transparency Project (TTP), our research initiative designed to hold large technology companies accountable. (TTP Website )
  • Statement from Campaign for Accountability on Statements from Anti-Choice Group, Children of God for Life, Condemning Possible COVID-19 Vaccine: On April 7th, CfA issued a statement in response to anti-choice group, Children of God for Life (CoGfL), denouncement of efforts by biotechnology company Moderna, Inc. to create a COVID-19 vaccine using of a cell line originally obtained from donated fetal tissue in development of this technique.
    • Anti-abortion ideologues are fighting the development of a vaccine created by scientists using donated fetal tissue, even if it could save hundreds of thousands of lives,” said Alice Huling, Counsel at Campaign for Accountability.
    • Read the Press Release.

What We're Reading:

  • Pro-Life Clinics Think They're Getting Coronavirus Bailout Money:  Faith-based anti-abortion groups are strategizing around cashing in on the trillion-dollar federal coronavirus relief bill — while Planned Parenthood is apparently left out in the cold. CfA's Alice Huling is also quoted in this piece. (VICE News, Apr 15 2020)
  • 'A very scary idea': How Google and Apple's COVID-19 tracing could turn sick people into pariahs: As tech companies plan how they can use their platforms to help prevent the spread, concerns about privacy abound. (Yahoo Finance, April 15 2020)
  • Hypocrisy: Crisis Pregnancy Centers Remain Open While Abortion Clinics Forced to Close: In many states, abortion clinics are being closed under the given reason that they are somehow "non-essential" medical services, while crisis pregnancy centers remain open. (Ms. Magazine, April 16 2020)
  • Notes on Language: Why We Stopped Using ‘Surgical Abortion’ at Rewire.News: Rewire.News explains their reasoning for updating their style guide to refer to in-office abortions as "procedural abortions" rather than "surgical abortions." The latter term is being used by some politicians to prevent in-office abortions because of some states' ban on "elective surgeries" during the pandemic. (Rewire.News, April 16 2020)
