John, It has been two years since the conservative supermajority of the Supreme Court stripped away the right for women and people to choose to have an abortion with their ruling in the Dobbs v. Jackson case (and Republicans are still rejoicing).
The consequences of this devastating decision have come quickly. In states with strict abortion bans, the maternal mortality rate has jumped, doctors are leaving for fear of persecution, and patients are traveling hundreds of miles to receive the care they need - if they can afford it.
Here in Connecticut, our Democratic leadership moved quickly to codify the right to an abortion in state law.
Our Democratic lawmakers respect our right to privacy and our ability to make healthcare decisions for ourselves. We can’t let Republicans gain ground here and put those fundamental rights at risk. For Republicans, Dobbs was just the beginning. The Supreme Court is still considering whether emergency rooms need to provide life saving care if that care is an abortion. And they are now vocally attacking both IVF and access to contraception.
We know what is coming next. This battle for our reproductive health is one we are going to have to continually fight through legislation, legal challenges, grassroots activism, and voting.
