Since the Supreme Court ripped away abortion rights two years ago, 25 million women saw their reproductive freedom either severely restricted or wiped away altogether.

Behind that statistic are so many tragic stories of women and families facing terrible hardship — as a direct result of the actions of right-wing politicians.

I’ve talked to women who have been forced to travel hundreds of miles for an abortion. Who have been forced to remain pregnant and face devastating health complications. Who have been forced to go through the traumatic experience of carrying an unviable pregnancy to term. Their stories will stay with me the rest of my life.

Here in Colorado, we’re fortunate to have laws protecting our reproductive freedoms. I was proud to lead the fight to pass those laws when I served in the State Senate. But that’s not good enough. No one’s basic human rights should be dependent on their zip code.

We can’t undo the damage that’s already been done. But what we can do is pass federal legislation reinstating access to abortion in all 50 states — and I’m determined to get it done.
