Kerri started going to camp at age 5 or 6. Her dad had been incarcerated and registered her and some of her siblings for Angel Tree®Christmas. This then gave her the opportunity to attend an Angel Tree camp.
When Kerri first attended camp, she says she was shy and sad. She shares, "I didn't smile a lot, which if you know me in the camp setting now, that is very, very different." She kept attending camp over the years, describing it as a good way to get a break from home, and she had trusted counselors and staff there who poured into her.
Kerri went to camp each year until she was 18 and then became a camp counselor. She now uses her lived experiences to relate to and encourage kids who have incarcerated parents.
Before we know it, summer will be here! You can make a difference in the life of a child with your gift. For prisoners’ children, camp is a safe place to experience the great outdoors, make new friends, and just be kids!
