John, COVID-19 has delayed animal cruelty trials,
leaving animal victims in need of ongoing care

John,
The consequences of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic have reached every corner
of society — including our legal system. The crisis has delayed court hearings
which means animals seized in criminal cruelty cases and held as evidence are
facing longer stays in shelters and need long term care, until their cases can
be heard.
John, animals can’t simply be adopted into forever
homes after being rescued from cruel situations. But shelters and rescues are not always equipped to take on the financial
burden of caring for animal victims of cruelty. Animals rescued from abuse often
have physical and psychological issues, and typically require extra care in
order to recover. In many cases, animal victims suffer from wounds, infections,
illness, emaciation, broken bones, dehydration, and parasites.
A lack of financial resources should never be the reason an animal suffers or
dies, or a cruelty case is not prosecuted.

[[link removed]] When the Animal Legal Defense Fund partners with law enforcement and
prosecutors in criminal cruelty cases, we often provide financial assistance to
cover the cost of care for the animal victims involved. We provide funds that
cover the cost of food, shelter, veterinary care, and more to ensure that
victims of abuse get the care they need to recover while we fight to ensure
their abusers pay for their crimes.
Your gift today will go twice as far to help provide abused animals with the
care they need, hold abusers accountable for their crimes, and fight for the
comprehensive legal protections animals deserve — thanks to a $75,000 matching
gift.

As court hearings are being pushed back, animals’ stays in holding shelters are
becoming longer and longer, with no end yet in sight. And the costs are increasing each day.
Additional funds are needed now to ensure these innocent animals get the best
possible care, and that the fight for justice for abused, neglected, and
exploited animals continues. We are asking anyone who can help to please
contribute what they can to give animal cruelty victims the second chance they deserve.
