Happy World Rainforest Day, John! Today, we’re celebrating one of the world’s most biodiverse and ecologically important places. Steve Schwartzman, EDF’s senior director of tropical forest policy, says it best:

There is no way to stabilize the climate without protecting tropical forests… We know living forests are the best technology for getting and keeping carbon out of the atmosphere.”

Yet in 2023 alone, the Earth lost 9.1 million acres of primary tropical forest, an area about the size of Switzerland. This destruction of tropical forests, and the plants and animals in them, is also a profound loss for the Indigenous Peoples who call the rainforest home.

Tropical forests need our help. When you donate by Sunday at midnight, you’ll unlock a $3-for-$1 bonus match and make FOUR times the impact to protect tropical forests, the people and wildlife who depend on them AND all our work protecting the climate.

Thanks to the $3-for-$1 match, your gift of $25 becomes $100... your gift of $50 becomes $200... and so on!

EDF partners with Indigenous Peoples to ensure they benefit financially for protecting tropical forests. By saving their forests from logging and other destructive activities, they can earn valuable, high quality carbon credits.

EDF has been on the ground in South America for more than three decades. And thanks to the support of EDF members like you, we’ve already made significant progress. We’ve reduced greenhouse gas emissions from Amazon deforestation by over 2.2 billion tons, while increasing agriculture and cattle production.

EDF co-created the Lowering Emissions by Accelerating Forest finance (LEAF) Coalition, for saving tropical forests and supporting the Indigenous Peoples who defend them. To date, LEAF has mobilized commitments of over $1.5 billion for the purchase of high-integrity emissions reductions credits. This represents a 100% increase in commitments from the private sector since the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference.

EDF and our partners also created The Tropical Forest Credit Integrity Guide for Companies, a resource that ensures carbon credits make a positive difference for Indigenous Peoples and the forests they work to protect and restore.

To continue our progress, we need members like you. Please donate by midnight on Sunday to claim your $3-for-$1 match and make four times the difference for tropical forests and our climate.

Thank you for protecting rainforests,
