John,
In Michigan, ballots for our August 6th primary will begin mailing this Monday. Four courageous candidates for State Representative need our urgent support.
Each candidate is a champion of working class and marginalized communities, fighting for an economy that puts people first, rather than billionaires and corporations. Each candidate is calling for a permanent ceasefire to save lives, recognizing the humanity of all people—including Palestinians and all of their constituents.
We need more people in public office at all levels who value life, stand up for human rights, and clearly denounce war crimes. In this time when dehumanization is endangering our communities, it’s vital to keep elected officials in office (and put more people into office!) who see everyone as worthy of life and of dignity.
Split a donation today between these four progressive candidates for Michigan State Representative who need our support now.
Dylan Wegela is a sitting member of the Michigan Legislature, a school teacher, and one of only 24 Michigan legislators who sent a letter to President Biden last November demanding a permanent ceasefire. In a state where 93% of state lawmakers have taken money from the utility monopoly DTE, Dylan is championing legislation to ban utility corporations from giving political contributions.
Tonya Myers Phillips is an attorney for economic and social justice. She has helped hundreds of people save their homes from foreclosure, successfully changed state law to support people at risk of closure, and led a successful campaign to pass the Detroit Right to Counsel Ordinance for people facing eviction. To protect tenants across the state, she helped get a statewide Right to Counsel bill introduced last year. A fierce advocate for criminal justice reform, she also led Detroit's first "Community Court" jail diversion program.
Rima Mohammad is an educator and a healthcare worker who emigrated to the U.S. as a refugee, with parents who are Palestinian refugees. She’s running for State Representative to ensure all of our voices are heard in the state capitol. A School Board member, she’s committed to protecting our rights to access quality public education, as well as affordable healthcare and clean water.
Layla Taha is a public health advocate and community organizer with an organizing background in voting rights and reproductive freedom. She helped enshrine abortion as a right in our state’s constitution. Layla is running for State Representative to make sure folks in Lansing prioritize people over profits.
