It’s been one year since we launched the Abortion Access Legal Defense Fund (Abortion Access LDF) in response to the legal chaos unleashed after the Supreme Court unjustly overturned Roe v. Wade. As anti-abortion extremists targeted abortion patients, providers, and supporters, we knew we had a critical role to play. We needed to help people who sought abortion care (or helped someone obtain) it get access to legal representation, regardless of their ability to pay.

That’s why we created the Abortion Access LDF—to help cover attorney fees and other legal expenses for abortion patients and those who have helped them. In just the first year, abortion supporters, providers, and patients in a dozen states have sought assistance from the Abortion Access LDF, including in states that have banned or drastically limited the availability of abortion. These individuals and organizations have faced legal action against them because they had an abortion or helped someone get one—with crushing legal costs. The Abortion Access LDF is designed to increase the resources available to alleviate this burden.
