The election results in Wisconsin are a beacon of hope for Democrats. But it is reprehensible that the Wisconsin GOP forced voters to risk their health and safety to cast their ballots.

The GOP is willing to risk people’s lives during a deadly pandemic to maintain their grip on power. And of course, their actions disproportionately affect communities of color. 175 polling locations in majority-black Milwaukee were closed on Election Day.

The footage from polling locations in Milwaukee is harrowing. Voters, spaced six feet apart, braved long lines, rain, and hail to cast their ballots. They stood for hours, wearing face masks or bandanas, to get into one of the five open polling places.

This is a strange and difficult time, but there is hope. We saw it in Wisconsin, when neighborhood restaurants and volunteers provided free food (from a distance) to the voters waiting in line. We should all be buoyed by the strength and resilience of the voters who stood in those lines, risking their lives to do their civic duty.

It’s up to us to build a better future for this country. Every one of us has a part to play, and that is why I am so proud of the young leaders from across Chicagoland who are already in the trenches doing the work.
