As a mother of two daughters, I know what the start of summer holds: playdates, pool parties, barbeques, and our kids celebrating some well-deserved time off. But summer vacation is also a time when kids spend more time at home and at the homes of friends and family.
When my daughters went out for playdates, I asked all kinds of questions about pets, allergies, and supervision. Today, I am calling on parents, guardians, and caregivers to add one more question to their list: "Is there an unlocked gun where my child plays?"
Yesterday, June 21, was ASK (Asking Saves Kids) Day. We use this day to remind parents to ASK about unsecured firearms in the home. It’s a simple question, but it has the power to save lives. In the United States, 4.6 million children live in homes with access to an unlocked or unsupervised gun. And every year, thousands of kids are injured or killed as a result. But these tragedies are preventable. Parents and caregivers can make a difference by asking this vital question and encouraging others to do the same.
So as we mark the start of summer, please join us in learning more about Brady’s ASK campaign and how you can spread the ASK message in your community. We have tips, tools, and resources for you to start the conversation and protect your kids from unsecured firearms in the home. |

VICTORY: Supreme Court Upholds Right to Keep Guns From Domestic Abusers |
On Friday, in an 8-1 decision, the United States Supreme Court announced its opinion in United States v. Rahimi. The Court upheld a federal law that allows for individuals subject to qualifying domestic violence restraining orders to be prohibited from possessing firearms. This is a huge victory, John.
In the majority opinion, Chief Justice Roberts wrote, “When a restraining order contains a finding that an individual poses a credible threat to the physical safety of an intimate partner, that individual may — consistent with the Second Amendment — be banned from possessing firearms while the order is in effect.” In recent years, the Supreme Court has gotten a lot wrong, and yet, an overwhelming majority of this Court agrees that the Second Amendment is not unlimited — an important win for domestic violence survivors, children, and the American people.
Guns are the weapon of choice for domestic abusers. In fact, female intimate partners are more likely to be murdered with a gun than by all other means combined. And in America, 60% of mass shooting events between 2014 and 2019 were either domestic violence attacks or perpetrated by those with a history of domestic violence.
We must remain more committed than ever to advocating for life-saving gun violence prevention measures that the Court has once again confirmed are consistent with the Second Amendment. You can learn more about United States v. Rahimi on our website.

We’re Making Life-Saving Progress in California |
GOOD news out of California: This week, two of our priority gun violence prevention bills have passed out of the Assembly Public Safety Committee!
The first bill, SB 965, will improve gun dealer oversight and help prevent the proliferation of firearms. It mandates the California Department of Justice (DOJ) to provide annual reports concerning its inspections of gun dealers, providing transparency about the inspections, and allowing the state to assess their effectiveness. By bolstering transparency regarding gun dealer oversight, irresponsible gun dealers can be held accountable, and lives will be saved.
The second bill, SB 1019, addresses the destruction of firearms or lack thereof. In recent months, it’s been uncovered that some businesses retained by law enforcement agencies to dispose of firearms only destroy the frame or receiver of a firearm and sell the remaining parts in nearly complete kits. With the addition of a frame or receiver, these kits can easily be assembled back into functioning firearms, and some of these guns have been recovered from crime scenes in California communities. SB 1019 will put an end to that.

Donor Spotlight: Karen Davey-Winter |
We are proud to feature supporters who fuel our life-saving mission to free America from gun violence. This week, that generous supporter is Karen Davey-Winter.
As a British national who has lived in the United States for 27 years, Karen has been horrified by the state of gun violence in America. She was shocked to learn that children have to practice active shooter drills at school and at Congress’ inability to protect public safety. Karen is well aware that other countries, like her home country of England, have similar rates of mental health issues as the United States, but they do not experience mass shootings at the rate we do because firearms are not so readily available.
But Karen knows not all hope is lost. Since joining Brady, Karen has been encouraged by the gun violence prevention movement’s progress, especially in her home state of California, where stronger gun laws have led to lower rates of gun violence. She is optimistic that other states will follow suit with Brady’s help. We thank Karen for supporting Brady and being an advocate for gun violence prevention.
