Seven years ago today, and just months after the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School, the U.S. Senate voted down an effort to expand background checks.

Do you remember how you felt that day?

The anger.

The pain.

The disappointment when 46 Senators looked at the most benign and practical of solutions offered by moderates from both parties and then looked over their shoulder at the powerful, shadowy gun lobby and brought shame on themselves by choosing to do nothing.

Some of those cowards are still in the Senate today. Some are even up for re-election this year.

And our job remains: either we must pass commonsense legislation to keep our communities safer from gun violence, or we must elect a Senate that will. So today, we are asking:

Can I count on you to make a $3 contribution to our campaign to change our gun laws? Do it today. Especially today. Send a message that we are in this fight until the fight is won.

Our democracy's history is littered with names we neither remember nor celebrate -- people who stood in the way of progress while protecting the powerful. Seven years ago, a number of senators voted to join that list.

With your help, we'll remove a number of them from office this November.
