Highway funding hit hard, Coronavirus relief package

** Less driving, less tax revenue
------------------------------------------------------------

As people hunker down at home, with few places to go but the grocery store, congestion has all but disappeared from our highways and freeways. Because people aren’t driving much, gasoline sales are projected to decrease by more than half during the pandemic.

That means revenue from per-gallon gas taxes also will plummet, and that worries state transportation departments, which rely primarily on gas taxes to fund their highway budgets.

** Free-market coalition applauds responsible reforms contained within coronavirus relief package
------------------------------------------------------------

The Wisconsin Legislature just passed a bipartisan coronavirus response package that included policy reforms recommended by the Wisconsin Free-Market Coalition. The Legislature is to be commended for avoiding the temptation to turn this into a massive spending bill, opting instead to exercise the fiscal restraint that provided Wisconsin with a budget surplus and healthy rainy-day fund when this crisis began.

By taking swift and responsible action to address the economic damage created by this epidemic, by lifting barriers to the health care community and holding the line on spending, Wisconsin is in a much better position to fight this pandemic and get back to normal.

** Free-market coalition COVID-19 letter to legislators

The unprecedented COVID crisis has devastated Wisconsin families, businesses and schools. The coming weeks will be deeply challenging as the state tries to pick up the pieces in the aftermath. Now, more than ever, public policy matters.
