Letter from the Mayor
Dear Washingtonians,
It is hot and, unfortunately, getting hotter throughout the weekend. With temperatures forecast to hit 100 degrees Fahrenheit on Saturday and Sunday, please check on neighbors and loved ones and take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses. Those without air conditioning are urged to seek relief in air-conditioned buildings and cooling centers.
You can call 311 to request free transportation to a cooling center or shelter for yourself or someone else.
Heat Illness
Here is what you should know about staying safe in the heat:
*Limit your time outdoors.* Vulnerable populations, including older adults and those with physical and mental health conditions, should limit their time outdoors to no more than 20 minutes per hour.
*Drink plenty of water.*
*Do not leave children or pets inside vehicles.*
*Keep pets indoors* and provide plenty of shade and water when they are outside.
Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.* If you suspect that you or someone you know is experiencing a heat-related illness, call 911.* Symptoms may include dry red skin, convulsions, throbbing headaches, disorientation or delirium, chills, nausea or vomiting, rapid pulse, or loss of consciousness.
*Recognize that extreme heat can have impacts on a person’s mental health*, and residents with existing mental health conditions are more vulnerable to extreme heat. Some psychiatric medications, including some antidepressants and antipsychotics, can affect body temperature regulation, increasing the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Stick to your treatment regimen and talk with your doctor about any concerns.
Stay safe and cool, check on each other, and let's work together to have a safe, fun weekend.
Sincerely,
Muriel Bowser
