** Monday Nature Mystery CORRECTION
------------------------------------------------------------
06/21/24
We made a mistake in our Monday Nature Mystery email this week! Our original email said the correct answer was Swainson's Warbler, but the correct answer is Swainson's Thrush (Catharus ustulatus), as corrected below. We apologize for the confusion!
We are pleased to announce the winner of our most recent Monday Nature Mystery, Sarah Corley.
(Please email your snail mail address and preference for a hat or tote bag to
[email protected] (mailto:
[email protected]) ).
Congratulations to Sarah for identifying Swainson’s Thrush (Catharus ustulatus). According to All About Birds ([link removed]) , Swainson’s Thrushes enliven summer mornings and evenings with their upward-spiraling, flutelike songs. During fall and spring migration, their soft, bell-like overhead “peeps” may be mistaken for the calls of frogs. These largely arboreal foragers pluck berries, glean bugs from leaves, or perch on branches and stumps. They also bound across the forest floor to catch insect prey. They breed in the north and the mountainous West, but they become very widespread during migration.
