Donald Trump and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad Dobbs decision

Welcome to the worst 2nd birthday party of your life. And no, we’re not talking about the time your uncle accidentally dropped your nephew’s birthday cake into the pool.

It’s the second birthday of the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson, the ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade and ushered in a new wave of abortion bans nationwide. And as an undisclosed gift ([link removed]) to our BFF Clarence Thomas, we polled ([link removed]) voters to show just how wrong they think he and his MAGA colleagues really are.

A majority of voters (55%), including 76% of Democrats, 60% of Independents, and 55% of swing voters, say that the Supreme Court should have left Roe v. Wade in place.

Last week, the Supreme Court rejected a challenge ([link removed].) by anti-abortion groups who wanted to restrict access to abortion pills. But the fight isn’t over, and the Supreme Court’s decision leaves the door open for other groups to go after the legality of abortion pills. Our poll finds that almost 66% of voters say that access to abortion pills should be legal, and in a separate question, 55% say that the U.S. government should continue allowing abortion medication to be sent by mail.

The survey also asked voters whether they think Trump supports or opposes various policies related to reproductive rights. Most voters think Trump supports a ban on abortion medication, as well as a 15-week abortion ban. However, nearly 4 in 10 voters are still unsure about his specific position on matters such as IVF or a six-week abortion ban.

If Samuel Alito isn’t too busy running around trying to take down the MAGA flags his wife keeps hanging up in his front yard, he should really take a look at our polling! Voters reject his backward opinions and want to see abortion access protected nationwide.

Here are some other highlights from DFP this week:

💖 hiring elle woods to prosecute climate homicide 💖

What, like it’s hard? For decades oil and gas companies have been polluting our air and water, pumping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, and lying to us about it the whole time. Now that we’re all sweating out of every pore in our bodies during this week’s heat wave, the idea of holding these companies legally accountable for climate change is starting to sound a lot more appealing.

Recent polling ([link removed]) from Data for Progress finds that 62% of voters believe that oil and gas companies should be held accountable for their contributions to climate change. This includes 84% of Democrats, 59% of Independents, and 40% of Republicans.

Among respondents who believe that the fossil fuel industry should be held legally accountable, 54% say they should be charged for endangering the public and causing potential harm to the public in the future. And interestingly, a plurality of voters would support charging these companies with homicide.

At this point, oil and gas companies are going to need to hire Annalise Keating if they want to get away with murder.

Voters support proposed ceasefire deal in Gaza

Now in the seventh month of the conflict, the war in Gaza has claimed over 37,000 lives. While the United States has backed a ceasefire deal that could end the fighting and see the return of hostages and prisoners, neither Israel nor Hamas ([link removed]) have publicly accepted the proposal.

When given a description of the various elements of the proposed ceasefire deal, 64% of likely voters say they support ([link removed]) the proposal, including 86% of Democrats, 64% of Independents, and 62% of swing voters.

[link removed]

The survey asked voters who they believe is primarily responsible for the lack of a permanent ceasefire in the ongoing conflict. A plurality of voters, 38%, say that both Hamas and Netanyahu are equally responsible for the lack of a ceasefire, followed by 36% who say Hamas alone and 13% who say Netanyahu alone.

As Data for Progress’ Deputy Executive Director, Ryan O’Donnell, wrote for Zeteo News ([link removed]) :

“American voters are critical of Netanyahu’s role in obstructing peace and support measures that align with proposed ceasefire efforts backed by the international community. This sentiment underscores a shift in public opinion ([link removed]) , reflecting a growing demand for accountability and a reassessment of U.S. foreign policy towards Israel.”
