John, earlier today the Supreme Court ruled 8-1 to uphold the federal law prohibiting those with domestic violence restraining orders from possessing guns in United States v. Rahimi .
I’m overjoyed at this news! It’s a huge victory for domestic violence survivors, and for anyone who cares about keeping our communities safe.
There’s no reason anyone who has a history of domestic violence should be able to access a lethal firearm. Research shows that when an abusive partner has access to a gun, domestic violence victims are five times more likely to be killed.
This ruling by SCOTUS will save lives. I’m relieved the court has rejected yet another attempt by the gun lobby to undermine a common-sense measure that prevents needless bloodshed at the hands of abusers.
However, I want to be crystal clear - there is a lot of work left to do. Firearms are the most common weapons used in domestic violence homicides, and we must continue taking decisive action to address gun violence.
I promise to continue leading the fight in Congress to pass common-sense gun reforms. Until families no longer live in fear of a gun falling into the wrong hands, I’ll show up every day to advocate for better protections.
Can you donate to my re-election campaign so I can keep up this work for years to come in Washington DC? I’m grateful to have you by my side. [[link removed]]
