Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish, has signed a letter to Matt Hancock urging him to take action regarding the lack of PPE for care workers during the Covid-19 outbreak.

The letter to the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care was co-ordinated by Jarrow MP Kate Osborne was signed by 59 Members of Parliament.

It asks Matt Hancock to:

• Contact every local authority and ask about the current stock levels of PPE and provide provision where needed
• Ensure that all care workers have access to the correct level of PPE that they need to do their job safely without putting themselves or residents at risk.
• Change the Government’s official guidance from care workers only needing to wear PPE when there are cases in a care home to all care workers needing to wear PPE when at work even if there aren’t any confirmed cases.

Andrew Gwynne said:

“Our care workers have too often been forgotten in the conversation around the Coronavirus outbreak.

 

“They are doing an incredibly important and difficult job, and the lack of appropriate PPE is making it a dangerous job in some cases too.

 

“The Government needs to everything it can to protect care workers and to make care homes safer places.”

 

Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish, has pledged his support for young carers and young adult carers during the Coronavirus crisis.

Young carers (under 16) and young adult carers (16-25) are young people who take on a caring role for a family member who has a disability, long-term illness, mental illness (including depression, anxieties) or issues with substance misuse.

Gwynne is joining other MPs in urging government, local authorities and professionals not to lose sight of the needs of young carers and young adult carers, and the people they care for, during this emergency.

Whilst the coronavirus pandemic is impacting all our lives, young carers and young adult carers are at particular risk during the emergency.

“Young carers and young adult carers are some of the unsung heroes in our communities.

 

“This Coronavirus outbreak is a difficult time for all of us, but young carers and young adult carers face particular difficulties and it is essential that they are not forgotten.

 

“I would encourage all young carers and young adult carers in Denton and Reddish to check out the information and advice provided by the Carers Trust.”

Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish, is supporting calls for the Government to support the WASPI women who have been badly affected by the Coronavirus crisis.

Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) is urging the Government to:

• Allow WASPI women who would otherwise be eligible to have early access to pension credit
• Give early access to the State Pension for those WASPI women who are due to reach State Pension age this financial year

The WASPI campaign represents many of the 3.8 million women born in the 1950s who were affected by changes to their State Pension age, which were implemented in the 1995 and 2011 Pensions Acts.

The Coronavirus outbreak is having a disproportionate impact the on 1950s-born women who are already suffering severe hardship, and now find themselves in an even more challenging position.

“For the past few years, I have been proud to support the WASPI campaign and the 1950s-born women who have been treated so unfairly by the Government’s handling of the change in the state pension age.

 

“These changes have caused a great deal of hardship for many WASPI women and unfortunately the Coronavirus outbreak and accompanying lockdown have made matters far worse.

 

“That’s why I’m joining calls for the Government to provide vital support for WASPI women at this time.”
