Gov. Justice orders flags to be flown at half-staff on Saturday, June 22, in honor of Judge Herman Canady Jr.
CHARLESTON, WV — Gov. Jim Justice has ordered all United States and West Virginia flags at the Capitol Complex and state-owned facilities in Kanawha County to be displayed at half-staff from dawn until dusk Saturday, June 22, 2024 in honor of Judge Herman Canady Jr.
Judge Canady was the second African American to graduate from the West Virginia University College of Law. He worked as an assistant prosecutor for seven years before being appointed as a Kanawha County Circuit Court Judge by Governor Jay Rockefeller, making him the first African American to hold this position in Kanawha County.
Judge Canady was elected as Chief Judge in the Circuit by colleagues in 1989 and held the status until 1998. Judge Canady retired in 2002 and later served as a mediator and senior judge.
