Dear John,

You can make a difference for animals this summer!

Summer has finally arrived in the UK, and while for many of us that means long days spent enjoying ourselves with friends and family.

For animals trapped in UK zoos and aquariums it often spells an escalation of the traumas they already face.

Zoos have a sickening practice of opening late to host alcohol-fuelled parties on summer nights. They are chaotic and disturbing for the animals who already have to endure a life in a cage and an endless parade of gawping faces parading past.

We have seen keepers admit that the animals are stressed, and these parties have even hit the headlines in the past with drunken attendees throwing beer over animals and attempting to enter their enclosures. You can read about these distressing events and find ways you can help in our news piece here:

But, whilst this summer comes with the threat of increased stress for captive animals, it also brings hope for much needed change.

We are looking forward to a new government being elected on the 4th of July, and with it the opportunity to build a better world for animals.

We have set out 6 clear goals for what we would like to see our new MPs achieve in the next parliament:
1. End the breeding, trading, and import of animals for zoos and aquariums.
2. Support existing initiatives to end the keeping of elephants in UK zoos with an immediate ban on breeding and trading of elephants in UK zoos.
3. Prohibit the pinioning and / or tethering of all birds held in captivity in the UK.
4. Introduce legislation which prohibits the exhibition of any animals, both wild and domestic, in travelling performances.
5. Amend the Zoo Licensing Act to ensure that zoos are open and transparent regarding the provenance and fate of all animals including imports, births, deaths, trading and medical procedures for all animals.
6. Prohibit the keeping, breeding and trading of wild, non-domesticated animals as exotic pets.

Whoever our next government is, we will continue to stand up for animals and fight for the changes they desperately require. But we can’t continue this vital work without you.

For the animals,
