For one out of every three bites of food we eat, we can thank pollinators. They ensure the health of ecosystems worldwide by helping plants reproduce and supporting healthy biodiversity. Without them, about 75 percent of all flowering plant species, including 1,200 agricultural crops, would not exist.
Pollinators are vital and closely interconnected with us and the planet we share. They also face many threats. Bees, the undisputed “world’s top pollinator” champions, are experiencing population declines as a result of pesticide use and habitat loss. The good news is, we can all make a difference—at home and around the globe.
To celebrate National Pollinator Week, June 17–23, you can help these unsung heroes by avoiding pesticides and growing native plants that produce nectar or otherwise support pollinators. For instance, native milkweed feeds monarch butterflies and provides a place to lay their eggs. As an ally for wildlife, your support also fuels innovative, collaborative conservation efforts that protect pollinators and the ecosystems we all rely on through our eight global Conservation Hubs.
