John — Mayor Eric Adams recently announced the creation of a commission to propose revisions to the City Charter on this November’s ballot.
We'll be honest, John: There are plenty of reasons to be skeptical about Mayor Adams’ motives behind creating this Charter Revision Commission (CRC).
* The Commission was created right after the City Council announced they would propose changes to the Charter. The Mayor’s Commission would override the Council and keep their amendments off the ballot.
* The Mayor’s appointment of the CRC was far too late for a thoughtful process, meaningful public testimony, or the kind of careful deliberation needed for changing the Charter — NYC’s constitution.
* Mayor Adams’ hastily-made appointments to the CRC lack the breadth, government experience, and independence necessary to independently assess the City government. In fact, one of Mayor Adams’ appointees is a New Jersey resident!
But while there is good reason to doubt the Mayor’s motives in appointing the Commission, there is no doubt we need to improve New York City’s fiscal management so the City government can work better for ALL New Yorkers.
That’s why Brad stepped up to offer 5 constructive proposals to amend the City Charter to strengthen NYC’s fiscal management. He presented these proposals to the Charter Revision Commission last week.
Brad’s proposals would build up City reserves, maintain the affordability of our debt, overhaul capital planning to address aging infrastructure and prepare for the climate crisis, and pay City vendors on time (including MWBEs and nonprofit human service providers, who often wait 10 months or more to get paid for their work).
Do you want leadership that focuses on long-term management improvements, instead of short-term political squabbles?
Please consider pitching in $10 or more today to help Brad Lander continue fighting for better City management and holding Mayor Adams accountable to New Yorkers. It’s Brad’s highest priority to make New York City run better, for today and tomorrow. [[link removed]]
