We did it!

The Stevens Point resolution committing to 100 percent clean energy and carbon neutrality passed!

We did it! 

Monday night, after more than a year of working together to build it, the Stevens Point Common Council voted unanimously to pass a resolution committing the city to 100 percent clean energy and carbon neutrality by 2050!

Let me be clear – this massive step towards a healthier, thriving city would not have been possible without the efforts of local residents, business owners, local elected officials, city staff, AND the support of members like you.

In this Stevens Point Journal article, District 4 Alderperson Lara Broderick said, “The point of this resolution is to codify the work that is already happening [in Stevens Point] and join the hundreds of U.S. cities that have already made the strong commitment to achieving 100 percent clean energy and carbon neutrality.”

Over 350 residents signed the petition supporting this resolution and, for more than a year, community members, city officials, and common council members worked together to draft the resolution. 

I can’t thank you all enough for getting us here.

This work began long before I came to Stevens Point. For example, Mary McComb, former member of the council, spoke of her work back in the late 2000s on sustainability and how this resolution is a continuation of her work. She has been advocating for climate action for decades and last night we did just that.

This work is just beginning. Next month, the common council will vote on the creation of a sustainability committee and, later this summer, Mayor Mike Wiza will appoint community leaders to begin working on a climate action plan.

We have more work to do, but today, I’m filled with hope and pride that future Pointers will have a sustainable, healthy, and thriving place to call home.
