It's an Honor
What a wonderful, long overdue event we had last weekend as we commemorated the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War.
We were so grateful to host hundreds of Vietnam-era Veterans, their families and survivors as Minnesota expressed its appreciation to those who served. From the Minnesota Military and Veterans Museum displays and the American Veterans Traveling Tribute wall to the active resource fair and oral history recordings, Vietnam Veterans had an opportunity to connect, heal and feel the gratitude of their communities.

During the last 40 years, Veterans have often received frequent words of thanks and a warm homecoming when returning from deployments. That was not the case 50 years ago, when Vietnam-era Veterans returned from a war-time assignment to find many Americans angry and less than appreciative of their service.

Serving all Minnesota Veterans is what we do. Making sure those Veterans are recognized for their contributions to our country is a big part of that service. June 12 is the day we set aside to recognize women who have served our nation. It marks the anniversary of the signing of the 1948 Women’s Armed Services Integration Act. Even though women have served in the U.S. military since the Revolutionary War, their contributions have often been overlooked or undervalued. This year, we take a moment to get to know two women Veterans who continue their service by working at the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA).

Juneteenth is celebrated annually on June 19 and commemorates the date that the final group of enslaved people in the United States was declared free – two months after the Civil War ended and two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. For many, Juneteenth is like a second Independence Day. Across the country, it includes activities ranging from parades and prayer services to political rallies and social gatherings with family and friends.

What a busy summer it has been so far for the Minnesota Veterans Homes! On May 31, the Montevideo Veterans Home hosted its formal dedication ceremony, welcoming long-time stakeholders, supporters and community members to officially celebrate the realization of a 16-year dream.
In Luverne, a crowd of nearly 200 Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) employees, current and former Luverne Veterans Home staff, volunteers, Residents and their loved ones, elected officials, Veterans Service Organizations and community friends gathered to reflect on the history of this Home and the award-winning care, programs and services that have been delivered here for the past three decades.

The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) recognizes June as Pride Month to commemorate the struggle for civil rights and celebrate the impact of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex and Asexual (LGBTQIA2S+) individuals around the world. This year marks the 55th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising against police brutality toward the LGBTQIA2S+ communities and the 11th anniversary of Minnesota legalizing same-sex marriage by legislative vote.
