WG Economy: Did The Latest Inflation

Report Have Any Impact?

WG Economy | David Winston

June 19, 2024

Last week's inflation report showed year-over-year CPI of 3.3%, a very slight improvement of 3.4% the previous month. Wall Street interpreted this outcome as good news because inflation wasn't going in the wrong direction. But the new numbers put the cumulative rate of inflation since the beginning of President Bident's term over the 20% mark (20.1%).

As the presidential election draws closer, the Biden team is searching for any signs of good news in the economy. But the question is - even when good economic news occurs, will it happen in time to have any impact for the President?

Our latest survey for Winning the Issues (June 14-16), done right after the June 12 release, shows hardly any impact of the new CPI report.

President Biden's Presidential Inflation Rate (PIR) ticked up to 20.1%, passing the 20% mark for the first time in his presidency. This means consumer prices have increased by over 20% since Biden's inaugural month. Note that in the month after the American Rescue Plan was signed into law in March 2021, year-over-year inflation jumped to 4.2%, and then in May hit 5.0%, and did not drop below that mark until April 2023.

On Wednesday, Chairman Avella and Third Way Co-Founder Matt Bennett, joined Fox News Channel's Harris Faulkner on the Faulkner Focus to discuss President Biden rapidly losing support among key voting blocks, and even those within his own party.
