Dear John,
People often ask me why our elected leaders in Congress are often so much more hawkish than their constituents. My answer? The political power of the pro-war lobby.
The powerful lobby AIPAC and its affiliates have already pledged over $100 million [[link removed]] to shape the 2024 elections and punish lawmakers who have stepped out of line on issues of war and peace. If you are a lawmaker who dares to challenge the pro-war policies advocated by AIPAC, you don't just need to be silenced – you need to be made an example so that others don't follow.
That's why so many eyes in Washington and in the Halls of Congress are focused on Jamaal Bowman, whose primary election in New York’s 16th Congressional district is next week.
Congressman Bowman has stood up against war with Iran and against collective punishment sanctions. He has stood up for civil rights at home and human rights for all people. And he was one of the very first members of Congress to call for a ceasefire in Gaza.
Because of this, AIPAC is spending millions of dollars a day (!) to defeat Jamaal Bowman next week.
This is how, for years, lawmakers have been kept in line – by convincing them that the cost of speaking out against the pro-war pro-Israel lobby was your political career, that if you didn't comply you would get defeated.
But that paradigm is shifting – and Jamaal Bowman's election may be a critical turning point.
That is why all of us who care about building people power, supporting peace, and securing real long-term change must step up – because if Jamaal Bowman wins reelection and defeats the millions spent by the pro-war pro-Israel lobby to defeat him, it will have ripple effects throughout Washington and build much needed political space for peace and common sense.
Here is how you can do your part:
donate to Bowman's campaign [[link removed]]
knock on doors in NY-16 (NY residents) [[link removed]]
join a virtual phone bank [[link removed]]
This is about more than one race – it is about where our politics is headed and if peace is possible. We can't let money and corrupt influence dictate the path ahead.
In solidarity,
