April 17, 2020: For the week ending March 28, the sales of alcohol at liquor and grocery stores were up 22% from the year before.[1]
That is contrary to warnings against drinking during the pandemic issued by the World Health Organization (WHO). The WHO recommends that government leaders limit access to alcohol during lockdowns.[1]
However, many U.S. states have deemed liquor stores to be essential businesses, allowing them to remain open during the lockdowns. Additionally, online sales of liquor have soared.[2]
