Now, as the group has grown over the past several years, I serve on the steering committee for Blue Victory. We meet monthly via Zoom and focus on the work we can do to win Swing Districts in Colorado, including phone banking, canvassing, letter writing, and anything else local campaigns may ask of us. Our group’s philosophy is that no one has to do everything, but everyone can do something. In practice, this means that each group member focuses their energy on the best way for them to personally get involved to elect Democrats. And it works: as a group, we have an unbroken record of victories—each race we’ve supported, we’ve won.
After five years leading Blue Victory, what keeps me dedicated to this work is that I believe our democracy is still at risk. Donald Trump is back on the ballot, and everything he stands for threatens the American way of life. While the thought of a second Trump term frankly terrifies me, what also keeps me coming back to this work is that I find activism therapeutic. Working with other like-minded people turns my panic into hope, and through my work with Blue Victory, I find a lot of reasons to be hopeful.
If you’re feeling panicked about this year’s elections and the future of our democracy, instead of agonizing, I encourage you to organize. Find a Swing Left group in your community or start your own, and turn your panic into hope.
Together, we can defeat Donald Trump again.
