Sustainable transport does amazing things. It shrinks traffic jams, cleans up our air and tackles climate change. It improves our health and boosts our economy. It connects us to the things that matter.
Get involved this week by:
- leaving the car at home
- exploring your local area on foot or by bike
- using our fantastic buses, trams or trains
Today (20 June) is also Clean Air Day! Did you know
Cars and vans are the biggest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and some types of air pollution in the UK, harming both our health and the planet. If more of us were able to walk, wheel, cycle or use public transport, it would make the air cleaner for us all and help to protect our health and the planet:
- If everyone switched just one car journey a month for a bus trip, there would be a billion fewer car journeys each year.
- If 50% of short journeys in towns and cities were walked or cycled, we could save enough carbon to power every home in Manchester, Bristol or Liverpool with electricity.
- Taking the train also produces nearly 80% less carbon emissions than driving, helping to protect the environment.
This Saturday, 22 June, is Windrush Day which marks the anniversary of the arrival in the UK of the HMT Empire Windrush with hundreds of passengers from the Caribbean. Stepping off the boat were children, mothers and fathers who became known as the Windrush generation.
Nottingham will be celebrating the anniversary and the rich and lasting contribution the Windrush generation has made to the city by raising the Windrush flag on the Council House on Saturday. A Nottingham Windrush Civic Reception will be held at the Council House tomorrow - Friday 21 June - organised by community partners including the Pilgrim Church Charitable Trust.

Black British Ballet will be showcasing its touring show, Island Movements – a short performance telling an epic tale of a family from the Windrush generation.
The café will be open and serving a small section of food and drink for the evening.
Tickets are £10 per person and available here.
