We couldn’t have done this without your support – thank you

John, this is HUGE. I’m standing outside the courts and we’ve just heard the UK Supreme Court has ruled in favour of climate in a landmark case that could have huge implications for new oil drilling [1].

I'm so excited to be able to share this historic and hopeful news with you today. This is a huge win for climate as a result of people power. Until now, the government granted permits based on emissions from extracting fossil fuels and the oil companies’ assessment of those emissions. Now, they will have to report on the emissions from burning fossil fuels too. This ruling is ground breaking and could stop future oil and gas projects from getting the green light.

This is your win. Today’s ruling is the first of its kind, and it’s only possible thanks to the support of millions of people like you. Thanks to your continued support, we've stood up to Big Oil for decades, and this win – supporting climate activist Sarah Finch and the Weald Action Group in their battle – is hugely significant [2].

Thank you for showing your determination to end the climate destruction and suffering caused by the fossil fuel industry.

So you can see, John, the fight isn’t over.We may have won today, but we’re still facing huge threats from oil giants like Shell, who want to silence us so they can continue their climate-wrecking activities. However, these intimidation lawsuits won’t stop us because we know the most powerful truth of all - you’re with us.

This is a historic win for people and the planet. Together we can stand up to Big Oil and win. The science is loud and clear – new fossil fuel projects are just incompatible with a healthy planet and unnecessary. A recent study found that the world has enough fossil fuel projects planned to meet global energy demand forecasts to 2050 [3]. Big Oil are putting corporate greed over people and the planet. We refuse to stand by and let them carry on their climate-wrecking activities.

With you by our side, we will continue to push politicians and the fossil fuel industry to stop new oil and gas expansion and transition to renewables. And we must ensure that the move to renewables puts working people front and centre, providing thousands of good green jobs.

We’ve won today, and we can keep winning – but only with your support.

Thank you for being on the right side of history – for standing with us and fighting against climate destruction worldwide. With your support, I’m confident we can secure a fairer, greener future for us all.

In solidarity,

Mel Evans

Head of Climate
