2023 Annual Report out now

The first-ever GCHD Annual Report [ [link removed] ] is now out! The 2023 Annual Report highlights the achievements, milestones, and progress we've made over the past year.

Creating an annual report is a great way to showcase the organization's achievements, goals, and progress made over the past year. It also helps in keeping everyone informed and aligned with the organization's mission and vision. The annual report serves as a roadmap for our continued growth and development as an organization.

Meet the team! Every week an employee from GCHD is highlighted on all platforms.

Kory Dominy

*Meet Kory Dominy! *Kory is an EMS Supervisor for the Galveston Area Ambulance Authority (GAAA). He joined us 16 years ago, and has been working in the EMS field since he started here.

Where are you from?
“Jasper, TX. Moved to Galveston County in 2004.”

What is your favorite part of your job?
“I love helping people and taking care of the team I supervise.”

What is one fun fact about you?
"I can hyperextend my knees and clap my elbows together. My wife calls them my chicken wings."

Would you rather have the hiccups forever or always feel as though you’re about to sneeze?
"Sneeze because I already sneeze a lot anyway."

We asked Kory what is something you would like everyone to know about your job/ department they may not know. Kory replied, "EMS transports patients to the hospital, but we have no control of where that patient goes once we get to the hospital and not all ambulance patients go to a room immediately."

 



Heynel Sevilla

*Meet Heynel Sevilla! *Heynel is the HIV Prevention- Team Lead for Galveston County Health District (GCHD). He joined the GCHD team four years ago and has worked in his field since then.

Where are you from?
"Born in Nicaragua."

What is your favorite part of your job?
"Everything but especially clinic days."

What is one fun fact about you?
"I like to travel to different places."

If you had to swap your legs with the legs of any other animal, which animal would you choose?
"A Pomeranian dog."

We asked Heynel what is something you would like everyone to know about your job/ department that they may not know. He said, "We do outreach and condom distribution through Galveston, Brazoria, and Matagorda counties."

 



Twyla Isaac

*Meet Twyla Isaac Jones!* Twyla is a Sanitarian for Galveston County Health District (GCHD). She joined the GCHD team 34 years ago and has worked in her field since then. Twyla lights up every room she walks in; she radiates positivity and kindness.

Where are you from?
"La Marque, Texas."

What is your favorite part of your job?
"Interacting with the public and assisting them in obtaining their goals."

What is one fun fact about you?
"I love to interact with people and laugh."

You've been granted a one-way ticket to another country of your choice. Where are you going?
"Greece."

We asked Twyla what is something you would like everyone to know about your job/ department that they may not know. She said, "We are here to help ensure that the public is served safe food."

 



Dixie Stange

*Meet Dixie Stange! *Dixie is the Executive Admin I for Galveston County Health District (GCHD). She joined the GCHD team about two years ago. "When I started in this field, there were no computers or internet. I typed on a manual typewriter and used a Rolodex." Dixie loves being at the front desk because she loves to be the first person you see when you need help! Dixie has a kind heart and is there when you need her; she never fails to make you smile.

Where are you from?
"My hometown is Diboll, TX. I now live in League City."

What is your favorite part of your job?
"I enjoy helping people, and I learn new things every day. I like that the GCHD is so involved with the community to help the citizens of Galveston County stay healthy, deal with food insecurities and animal services."

What is one fun fact about you?
"Boating/Sailing was my passion for many years. I would rather be on the water."

If animals could talk, which one do you think would be the funniest?
"Dogs."

We asked Dixie what is something you would like everyone to know about your job/ department they may not know. This is what she said, "I answer the phone and sit in the front of the GCHD Executive office. Part of my job is directing people and phone calls to the right department. I appreciate that GCHD is involved in the overall health of our community. They assist children and seniors, administer vaccines, control diseases, and keep our restaurants safe and clean, among other things."

 



Terri Byrd

*Meet Terri Byrd! *Terri is the Receiving & Inventory Specialist for Galveston County Health District (GCHD). She joined the GCHD team about six years ago, and when asked how long she has worked in her field, she says, "I have been in this receiving & inventory field longer than I’d like to admit."

Where are you from?
"I was born in Galveston and raised in Santa Fe."

What is your favorite part of your job?
"All the people I work with!"

What is one fun fact about you?
"I like to go bowling. I’m not good at it, but I like it."

If a movie was made of your life, what genre would it be, who would play you?
"Comedy, I’m thinking Kirstie Alley."

We asked Terri what is something you would like everyone to know about your job/ department they may not know. This is what she said, "Everything here at the Health District is purchased and received in our Department. We support the Animal Resource Center, Galveston Area Ambulance Authority, Coastal Health and Wellness, and the County Environmental, Vital Statistics, Epidemiology, WIC, Immunizations, and Community Health Departments. Every pen, staple, syringe, computer, dental tool, desk, chair, and x-rays start with us."*

GCHD cohosts 2024 TPHA Conference

Galveston County Health District (GCHD) and UTMB School of Public & Population Health cohosted the Texas Public Health Association’s (TPHA) 100th Annual Education Conference. The milestone event took place from May 20-22, 2024, at the Galveston Island Convention Center. The conference served as a platform for public health professionals, researchers, educators, and advocates to convene, collaborate, and exchange innovative ideas and best practices in public health.

Director of Community Health Services presents at TPHA Conference

Ashley Sciba, MPH, BSN, RN, the Director of Community Health Services at the Galveston County Health District, and Michael Goodman, MDiv, MPH, DrPH, Associate Professor at the UTMB School of Public and Population Health, spoke at the Texas Public Health Association's annual conference about preventing opioid-related deaths within Galveston County. They discussed the process and progress being made, as well as the importance of the project.

Happy National EMS Week!

Galveston County Health District and Galveston Area Ambulance Authority celebrated National EMS Week May 19-25. 

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is a vital response system staffed by highly skilled pre-hospital clinicians. They not only respond to emergencies but also play a crucial role in identifying community health crises and providing essential care. Beyond traditional ambulances and helicopters, EMS encompasses a coordinated network involving various agencies. It's a versatile system prepared for any emergency, even those not requiring hospitalization.

On EMS Recognition Day, we honored members of the EMS community who regularly go above and beyond what’s expected. It’s a day to thank first responders for their unwavering commitment to serving their communities. Galveston Area Ambulance Authority had staff meetings throughout the week to inform staff about hurricane preparedness before the upcoming hurricane season. Thank you to our staff for everything you do!

GCHD attends the 2024 National Latinx Conference on HIV, HCV, & SUD

The 2024 National Latinx Conference on HIV, HCV, & SUD, aka NaLa, was held in El Paso, TX, from May 2 to May 4, 2024. This conference aims to address health disparities affecting the Latinx population, including HIV, Hepatitis C (HCV), and Substance Use Disorder (SUD). By bringing together experts from various fields, such as education, advocacy, and clinical practice, GCHD and the HCC Public Health Nurses and Prevention Team aim to create opportunities to share information and efforts around health disparities that negatively impact the Latinx population, thus creating better health outcomes for the Latinx population within the community we serve.

Public Health staff participate in SYNC 2024 Conference

Galveston County Health District Public Health staff participated in the SYNC 2024 Conference in Washington, DC.

The SYNC 2024 theme, “Bringing SYNChronicity to Life: SYNCing the Elements of Life with Health,” reflects aligning the fundamental elements of life — earth, water, air, and fire — with the sphere of HIV, HCV, STIs, Harm Reduction, and LGBTQ health. SYNC 2024 provides multi-disciplinary content to a diverse community of participants, encouraging purposeful interaction and interconnectedness to collectively understand and address the changing healthcare landscape and its impact on healthcare delivery and outcomes.

GCHD, CHW celebrate Men's Health Month

Galveston County Health District, Coastal Health & Wellness, and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension partnered to host a Men's Health Month Celebration on June 8th at the Wayne Johnson Community Center in La Marque. The event featured a free 1k walk, health screenings including blood pressure, blood sugar, and oxygen level checks, health resources, and local vendors.
